Hi,

I am running a Dell Studio 1555 with 64 bit Win7 SP1. About 3 weeks ago, I lost the wireless card to failure. It has been replaced and works great. However, the Windows update download must have been corrupted when the wireless card was dying. I tried running the troubleshooter and it never completes it just says checking for updates on line... for hours. Just FYI, the Windows update had an old date which never changed, and while downloads were listed if you tried to get them the action indicator would move across the screen but the download never was downloaded and the % never changed. I let it run for a full 24 hours.

After searching the found a resource who said to delete all files found in C:/Windows/Software Distribution. I did this and still have them in my Recycle bin. I then started Windows Update. It started to repopulate the Software Distribution folder, but after 24 hours little was done. I opened the Reporting Events.log to find this:

I have read several entries in this group and see that Microsoft is changing the Update feature. Is this causing my problem or do I have other options to get the Windows Update to work?

Thanks for your help!

enable automatic updates to download but not install - set the time to check to the closest hour, eg. if you are working on it at 12.30pm, set it to 1pm to check for updates.

Wait some time and allow windows to download and then install the appropriate updates.

Its a fairly well known issue with windows 7 and updates. Cant recall the KB that fixes it but its a PITA.

Once updates are working again, disable your automatic updates should you desire.

Or you can let it run for 12-18 hours.M$ has refused to fix the issue. Their fix is to go to 10.

FWIW, I've just done a Win 7 system rebuild, starting with a pre-SP1 installation. I immediately disabled Windows Update. Having done that, the first update to install was SP1 (KB976932), followed by .Net 4.6 (KB3151800), then IE11 ( and Windows Update updates KB3020369 & KB3172605. After re-booting, Windows Update was enabled and, after an hour or so returned a list of ~170 updates. The KB updates mentioned above (& below) are all available via the Windows Update Catalog at After installing all the listed updates, I installed the Convenience rollup update for Windows 7 SP1 (KB3125574).

Do note that, if you're not on-line when installing IE11, you'll need to ensure the following updates are installed beforehand: KB2533623, KB2639308, KB2670838, KB2729094, KB2731771, KB2786081, KB2834140, KB2882822 & KB2888049. If you're online, the IE11 installer downloads them, if needed.
