windows update error c80003fa

Hi,

Windows update is not working on my PC. I run w7 64 on an Acer machine. I get the same message over and over . error code is C80003fa. I've search the web for solutions but everything failed. I've tryed renaming SoftwareDistribution, The miscrosoft fix, The Stand alone installer. All drivers/BIOS are up to date. There is no virus or malwarare on the machine , its a fresh installation. Can someone help me it's getting very frustrating.

Make sure date and time both in Windows and in BIOS are correct.

I have tried all the above suggestion, no luck. still have the same problem. Windows update keep showing the error code.

Running some searches for that error code at the MS Knowledge base points to connection problems as being the cause.

Try clearing your DNS cache (ipconfig /flushdns) in a command prompt.

Power cycling your router (if you can) and wait around a minute before powering it back up.

Depending on your ISP you could try setting your network connection to use Google's public DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)

What happens if you manually download updates? Can you download them bearing in mind ChrisHirst's last post?

Thanks everyone for your help. Any of the Microsoft FIX was able to correct the problem.I'm not able to download the updates manually. I'm able to go on the internet without a problem. My router is not the problem, i have a DELL PC running W7,plugged on the same router and the updates are working fine. Virus ans malwares are not the problems, it's a fresh/clean installation. There is no antivirus installed and no firewall. It's seems to be a dead end, could it be related to any hardware problem instead of the software. Any suggestions are more than welcome.

Since it is a fresh install, at what Service Pack level are you at?

if you DO NOT have SP1 installed, then manually DL the service pack and install it MANUALLY, before proceeding with the troubleshooting...

I have tried to install SP1 manually ,and it failed, Here is the error code:
"Catastrophic failure" Error E_UNEXPECTED (0X8000ffff )
What else can i do ??

With mention of the word "Catastrophic" it might pay you to start looking at hardware problems as a cause.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (this will run it in a Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, restart it by ticking both boxes, and rerun it to allow it to attempt to fix any found problems.


The hard drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software that is bootable, or that may even run from within Windows, that will thoroughly check the condition of your hard drive

1. if you have any AV software running, then at this stage disable it...
2. through the search bar type COMMAND, at the top choose the COMMAND applet and right click then "run as Administrator", then enter the following in the CMD window: SFC /SCANNOW
this will check the integrity of the system files, have the install DVD at hand in case it is asked for...
3. run CHKDSK /F thereafter...
4. reboot
5. check that ALL drivers for all devices are up to date, including the chipset drivers and VGA drivers...
6. attempt to run the SP1 installer again, if you have another PC try downloading the SP1 there and then transfer it to your PC/Laptop (e.g. USB thumb drive / USB HDD)...
