Hello,

Server 2003 Enterprise Edition.

I did the latest Windows update this morning. I had to restart the computer. When it booted I get a message "Windows could not start because of an error in the software. Load needed DLLs kernel."

I've been lucky no problems in a long time. I'm a little rusty. Should I do a repair using the installation disk?
And will it replace the DLLs?

Thanks

This issue will occur if the HAL.DLL and Ntoskrnl.exe files are mismatched.

To resolve this issue, expand the correct HAL.DLL and Ntoskrnl.exe files from the Windows Server 2003 SP1 CD-ROM, or copy them from an alternate install of Windows Server 2003 SP1. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replay. I don't have SP1 or another install.
I loaded SP1 form Microsoft's update site so I have no copy.

I'm going to the site and see if I can down load it to disk.

When I do get SP1 how do I repair the DLLs? Do I use the SFC.exe utility?

Thanks

Do you have current backups? You can get the files from there and re-install using recovery console.

You can also check your dllcache using recovery console. Hopefully those are still good.

No backups. I know what your thinking. I have four more computers and I keep those backed up. Don't know why I don't keep this one up. I have a Raid set up I guess I thought that would cover my .... I changed over to the second HD it says it can't find the OS.

I was using this OS for studying in a lab setup at home. Now I just use it for DVD burning because it is the fastest computer I have.

I have some programs and photos that will be hard to replace. I would like to repair if I can.

Thanks

Hello bracadar,

thanks for the help. I did a repair using the OS disk. Then I updated SP1 and 2 from Windows Update site. Had a little trouble finding the drivers for the mother board. Everything working fine now.

Ordered SP1 and SP2 disks so I don't have to go through this again.
