Hello,

Please forgive me if this is a basic question, my knowledge of Unix is minimal.

A client currently has a SCO Unix box running a database app. There is a Digiboard multiport card and two breakout boxes for 32 serial ports total. Users connect via hardwired serial lines and J.River's ICE.TEN software.

I am going to be putting in a LAN and converting to TCP/IP. My question is, what (if anything) do I have to do besides install/cfg a NIC and IP on the SCO box to allow users to connect to it via IP? They'll be using J.River's ICE.TCP Pro software.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Hi,
I dont think you will have to do much of anything else except possible make sure the terminal emulation type being used by ICE.TCP is compatible with the application.

Actually, there are several issues you must look at before you do this project. First and foremost is the version of SCO your client is running. In older versions such as 3.2v4.2 TCP/IP networking was an add-on program. If you are running a OpenServer 5.0.X ENTERPRISE system, configuring TCP/IP networking is pretty much straight forward. OpenServer 5.0.X HOST systems are a different story. UnixWare is also pretty straight forward as well.

Another consideration is the database application itself. Some older Apps. will not communicate via TCP/IP.

As you can see, this is a bit more involved than just adding a NIC to the system and setting up ICE/TCP.

Feel free to email if you would like to discuss this more.
