Hello,
This problem is a complicated one and I'm hoping someone out there can give me suggestions on where to look to resolve the problem.
I have 2 remote users, one on the West coast and the other on the East. Both have been complaining about network speeds over the VPN. I have never experienced the slowness they are describing until I realized that I'm not using the same file shares they are.
They were complaining about this one "Sales" share that they were saying would take up to 5-10 minutes to open over the VPN. They are right. At first I just thought that it was their geographical location and distance back to the home office; typical lag. However, from my house (2 miles away) I experience the same lag.
Here's what I know:
The server the share resides on is running Windows Storage Server 2003. This server does not have any storage devices attached to it (NAS/SAN) and I've been told that this OS was purchased because it was cheaper than standart Windows Server 2003. I have moved the share to a different server on the same subnet and all is fine and access times are magnitudes faster. I have verified that both servers have identical network settings and that they are connected to the same switch.
I can log into this server and browse to the "sales" share and there are two folders that when you single-click on them it takes about 15 seconds for the folder to "highlight". Once you get into one of these folders you can hit the "Back" button and it will take another 30-45 seconds for the explorer window to re-populate. These are the only the only two folders that I know of in this share that do this. Also, once you connect over VPN access to these two dir's becomes painfully slow.
My Director thinks that it has something to do with permissions, but I've started at the top level of the share and checked the permissions all the way down and there is nothing that is wrong as I see it. Also, there are two other shares on this server and neither of them have this problem.
The only thing I see that is different between one server's share and the next is that this server is running Windows Storage Server, and the other is not.
Any ideas?
