Windows Slowdown after it hangs

About a week ago I started having a problem of windows sometimes hanging when I clicked with either right or left mouse button. After I kill the process which is indicated as "not responding" opening or using windows becomes very very slow. If I reboot, many times I have to kill a non existing Iexplorer session, once rebooted it is fine till the next hang.

I have run regsvr32, and reloaded Iexplorer. My machine is Dell P4 3.2Mhz, 1Gb memory 2x40 hard drives running Xp SP1 and IE 6.02

Any suggestions??

Have you updated and run anti virus and malware programs? Ad Ware SE and spy bot search and destroy. If this doesnt do the trick try running SFC.
