Hi Everyone,

I'm at my wits ends now. We've been hit by the W32.Downadup.B virus and in my haste to protect my Domain controller I installed the KB958644 patch. Now the server will not boot. I uninstalled the patch and after numerous tries I initially got the server to start using the last known good config, however a number of services were failing e.g Netlogon would not start or stop if started and my Trust relationships no longer worked. I reluctantly restarted the server and now it won't start. It sticks on Applying network setting and if i remove the network cable from the nic, it moves on to stick at Applying computer settings. Booting in safe mode with Networking works, but even when I disable a number of services, it still will not boot normally. Starting in debugging mode does not work either.

This is a critical server, not only is it my PDC it's also my Exchange server. So network services are severely affected. Any assistance would be greatly, appreciated.

Well if you can't get into it in Safe Mode then your options are limited. First do you back up the system state, if so try to restore from there. Another option if get a version of Linux Live CD like Ubuntu and try to boot to that. Then put a virus software on a USB portable app to scan the drives.

The server finally came up, but the issues continue, there seems to be no way to patch the server due to the problems between exchange and the patch. Seems like I'll have to continue researching.

it's not worth the effort trying to repair an infected server just restore from the last good backup.
