Hi,
What does it means when someone sells a windows 2003 server with 5 cal licences.
It's 5 windows xp licences for the other pc's?

Thanks.

Windows 2003 by default ships with 5 free CAL's. This means that legally only 5 devices/users can authenticate to this server, i.e. you can have 5 workstations on your network connecting to the 2003 server. You must buy additional CAL's for each device you want to authenticate to this server. CAL's do not need to be purchased if the server is being accessed via a web page it hosts. There is nothin physical to install CAL's you are simply sent a certificate of authenticity that you have purchased X number of CAL's. For a more detailed overview read this

Just to clarify, there is no installation for the initial 5 CAL's included. Don't you have to make the per server or the per user/device decision during setup.

I believe there is an installation required for additional CAL's. There is a wizard in Server 2003 to install them. Otherwise I believe you are locked out if more that 5 users/devices try to access the server?

Hi,

You don't need CAL's for users connecting with winodws XPPro, Windows 2000 Pro, Windows XP home SP2 machines. You get built in free ones for that.

I don't believe you get free CAL's with XP etc any more.
