I have an interesting problem with our Windows Server 2003 domain controller. Every so often we get an error message stating the "server is unresponsive" (not an exact quote) when we try to open or make a change to a management console (active directory, group policy, our Symantec System Console, etc). If we try another console (or the same) immediately, we get the same error message. If we wait a few minutes and try again, no problem, the console comes up and works fine.

None of the network services are interrupted while this is happening, it only seems to affect the person operating on the server itself.

This ONLY happens when the server's console hasn't been used in awhile, it never happens on days where a lot of work is being done on the server. I can only describe it as if the GUI fell asleep from non-use and needed a few seconds to wake up. We've had no service disruptions, no error messages in the logs, etc. Any ideas? Thanks!

I have had countless problems similar to the one described in your scenario. In the end it boiled down to symantec system console. I would for try disabling Symantec System Center for a few days to a week, better still remove it. Eset has worked wonders for me and the RSAT tool is great.

If you decide to remove it, clean the registry with a good tool, it leaves all kinds of mess that easily clogs up a server.
