This will be a very easy question for those who have used it so far.

I installed the Windows Server Backup add-in and make an entire system backup to an external drive that included a System State and Bare Metal Backup in the backup process. The drive shows it has data on it but Im unaware of exactly how to check if it backed up correctly without trying to recover from it.

Also, if a drive fails and I need to recover from a backup, do I have to completely install Server 08 and then run the Windows Server Backup to recover my files, folders, and AD or is there a way to do it on boot without a full OS install?

Great question. I also would like to know the answer to this question.

The only way to test it (short of doing a verify at the time of backup) is to try to restore it.

If a drive fails and you need to recover, your ability to recover will depend on what drive failed. Worst case scenario you should be able to attach the drive used to store backups to another server and restore the needed files/folders from there.

Has anyone sucessfully restored from a complete system backup? I can see a image .VDH file that is the size of the occupied space on the drive I was backing up but when I boot from the Windows Server 08 disc and choose repair, it cant see a backup. So then I installed the OS and tried to recover from Windwos Server Backup and it saw the recovery image named what I named it, but said it couldnt use the backup. Not sure what to do.
