Hi Folks, this morning, totally out of the blue my pc restarted and then I got the following
missing or corrupt etc etc ... windows root>\system32\hal.dll

I've been really worried..as I hadn't backed up for ages and had just done a photo shoot and hadn't backed up before deleting the images from the card...

I went through the recovery on the XP disc, nothing.. then installed a new version of windows on the same partition called windows2 - which worked and allowed my access to my docs to copy everything to my laptop (thank goodness) but I need to try and get some info (access file etc) from my old desktop (original windows) which I dont seem to be able to see through windows2 install (i can get the desktop up but doesn't show files etc).. any ideas on how I could get this info?

If I try and load the original windows it gets so far and then restarts (at least the error has now gone)

Any info would be FAB!

thanks folks

Jules

Try these to see if you can access your missing files.

What errors or messages are you seeing (or type of files not seeing) when you try to access these files and folders?
Are you showing both Hidden and System files via Control Panel/ Folder Options/ View?

Did you try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
