Hi Folks,

i have a laptop that connects to a work computer using remote desktop. When tested at work, it connects fine using a wireless signal. However, if the laptop is taken home, it states that it cannot connect to the remote computer. None of the home computers can connect.

Work network is a workgroup (not a domain).

Any ideas?

You would have to have a Mapped IP from your firewall at work into the work computer and then from home you would connect to the external address.

Thanks for the input. I am not sure if I understand what you are saying. How do I do that?

I have read that I need to utilize port forwarding. On the office router, I need to open port 3389 and direct it to the PC that I am trying to connect to. Is this correct?

It sounds as if you are saying I need to generate a separate IP to connect to thru mapping. How is this done?

FYI:
The office PC has an IP address in the range: of 192.168.0.xxx

Oh, a couple of other things.

The office does not have a dedicate server. It is a workgroup (peer to peer).

I cannot ping the office computer from outside the office.

Basically your IT dept would have to port forward 3389 to the company internal IP that would be statically set on the pc. They would then need to open that port to the internet and give you their external IP. Now an easier way to access your pc at work is logmein.com providing you have admin access to your pc at the office.

yes, your IT staff would need to open and forward a port from your outside IP address to the internal IP of the computer you need to remote into. Likely you would want to require a VPN connection to ensure security before allowing the guest to remote desktop.

I use gotomypc(currently) or logmein(in the past) instead of hassling with VPN and remote desktop (still available, but don't use unless have no other options remaining).

Alright, here is an update of everything that has been done.

*Remote Desktop works fine within the network.
*Accessing from outside the network is non-responsive.
*We are using a D-Link router.

1. Remote Desktop is enabled on remote (target) computer.
2. Port Forwarding has been enabled on the router.
3. For security, the default port number has been altered on the remote machine and is referenced by port forwarding.
4. The external IP address has been identified.
5. The Remote Desktop connection references the external IP address of the router along with the altered port.

Example: 73.xx.xxx.xxx:port#

I cannot connect from the Internet. What am I missing?
The router currently has "ping" requests disabled. Can that cause a problem?

Update for anyone else having a similar issue.

Norton Internet Security was preventing the connection on the host computer. Norton allowed connections from other computers within the network, but not external. Once I set up a General Rule allowing connections on the specified port (both Local and Remote), I was able to make the connection.
