Does anyone know what the HKEY stands for in Windows registry key names

I thought I'd read somewhere it was "handle-key", arranged in hives, but I also could be wrong.

diogenes10 - don't put yourself down, I think you are right. It stands for handle of the opened key.

I like to think of them as "HOTKEYS" though, a bit more racy than handle or hive. Regards
