When I boot up my computer, I get an error message that says- Windows protection error while initializing device VPICD. You need to restart your computer. -This occurred after I installed a CD-ROM drive. I can boot to DOS but the GUI can't load with this error. The computer is a Compaq Deskpro Pentium II. Does anyone know how to fix this without reinstalling windows? The drive is detected in bios but the CD can't be accessed, so the installation CD doesn't help.

A 1/2 empty glass + 1/2 empty glass = 1 empty glass.

Can you boot to safe mode, go to device manager, and remove all cd-rom devices?

Matt J.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

I can't boot into safe mode. The same error still occurs. I can only boot into DOS. I checked the bootlog and the only thing not loading correctly is ndis2sup.vxd. Could this be causing the problem?

I suspect a hardware problem. First, reseat memory, and all expansion cards. Make sure power connectors and data transfer cables are secure. Try again. If that doesn't do it, disconnect the new cd drive, try again.
