My dear Mum got a new Lexmark printer (not sure of the model) for Christmas and I set it up for her exactly as instructions dictated. It was working fine, but we noticed after rebooting, it came up to an error "Windows Protection Error - Restart Your Computer" Her PC had been fine before this. As long as the printer is disconnected, the PC boots and operates fine, but if the printer is plugged in while booting, this error comes up. I've booting into Safe Mode, and looked in the Device Manager, there are no problems there.
I've been having her only plug it in when she needs to print (its USB so this can be done) and then unplug it after, but I'd rather fix it so this can always be connected!

My Epson 2200 is usually turned off when I boot. Windows sometimes puts up an error message which I ignore. If I turn it on, Windows makes its sound to acknowledge its presence, and it works fine. Do you get the error if the printer is connected, but turned off?

Thanks, yes, even if it is turned off. Also, the PC is running Win98SE.
