I have a few questions about a couple PC's i've been having problems with.

First question: Whenever I shut down, I get the windows protection error. Any ideas on correcting this problem.

Second question: I know blue screens are supposed to be hardware related, but is there any way to test out which hardware it could be short of swapping parts?

Last question: What software is out there that can be used to test CPU's. I've seen certain programs used by all different vendors to test their presumably bad processors, but I can't seem to remember the names of them. Any recommendations are appreciated.

1. Possibly a defective Hard drive.

2. I dont think there are any hard and fast rules relating BSoD's to Hardware. Its difficult to get valid results from test programs because the software is running on the potentialy faulty hardware, if you see what I mean.

3. Yes there are loads of Hardware/ Software checking utilitys out there , SiSoft Sandra, Wincheckit. Loads more
the best ones dont run under windows. Best to do a web search.

Hope this help a little
Steve.

Well I know there's no problems on this hard drive. I did download Sisoft Sandra and tried that out, thanks. I seem to have fixed the problem by booting in safe mode and changing smartdrv.exe to smartdrv.old, autoexec.bat to autoexec.old, and config.sys to config.old. I saw that on someone's post when I searched this site. That appears to have fixed the problem, hopefully...

Does anyone have any input on the blue screens? Any links to something that can tell you what the particular errors mean, and maybe how to test individual hardware? Thanks again.

Install Win2000. No Blue Screens there! No matter what you do Win98 is full of errors, these screens dont mean that you have a hardware issue. Like sggaunt said it may be that the software is not communicating with the hardware correctly. Win2000 has fixed all of that. I wolud upgrade man.

My suggestions are just that, suggestions.

I would love to upgrade to 2000. The problem is this is a business. They refuse to pay to upgrade all these machines to 2000. I personally run 2000 Professional and Advanced Server at my home. I totally agree with you, but for now I have to figure out a way to take care of this problem.

Also, today I ran into a similar problem. Last night I bumped up the memory in a machine. Upon shutdown it gave windows protection error. When I removed the new memory it still did the same thing. I pulled out both sticks and tried totally new memory. Same thing. I tried it in every slot, same thing. I tried just re-installing windows on top of itself from the wincabs directory now it blue screens and windows protection error =). I would appreciate any input, and thank anyone for doin so.

Is this on a Win98 PC if so this is a known issue.
Article ID: Q239887
there is a download that patches the problem..... I am also in the mind that the NT kernel is the only real platform.... :)

This is Win98 SE. Article ID: Q239887 refers to what? And like I said, i'd love to switch to NT/2000, but sort of impossible =). Thank you for responding.

Ted

The shutdown patch didn't work =). Any other ideas? Please I really need input here.

You are going to get blue screens as long as you are using win 98.

As for you windows protection error. One of two things it could be your system is gettin to hot or you have a bad stick of ram. Check those two things and your problem will be solved

Installed 98 on an old PB 100Mhz. Get Windows Protection Error on startup...can only boot up in Safe Mode. ONE TIME...I don't know why or how.............but ONE TIME it started up in final windows setup ...ran thru last 10 mins and opened in Normal Mode. I went in and started configuring modem etc and when I restarted I am back to Windows Protection Error. When I try to start up from CD it says no device found...............Heaven Help... I would really appreciate a fix!!!!
