Windows Protection error after installing HP Colorado Backup

I have installed the HP Colorado backup tape and software on Windows 95. Following the install Windows exits half way through startup with "Windows Protection error - please restart your computer" It will subsequently start in safe mode but i have to uninstall the Colorado to get back to a working Windows config.
Nothing strange about the setup one disk, one CD on IDE0 and the colorado on IDE1. HP software insists it should be configured as a slave and the HP diagnostics say its fine.
Can anyone tell me what causes the protection error and more importantly anything that might help to get round it.
One other hint - it tells me that the master boot record has been changed. (I definitely don't have a virus)
Thoughts?

Just a couple of questions... is your processor an AMD K62? What minor version of Win 95 are you running? These questions (and more) could change the answer, substantially.

Man... it's hard to see a system without seeing the system. Based on the symptoms you described, the problem could be almost anything.

I could post a W.A.G (Wild Ass Guess) or you could post some more details and let the experts respond with some S.W.A.G.s (Scientific Wild Ass Guesses).

My WAG is that your OS and hardware are at war with each other. A little more information might turn that into a SWAG.

OK Some more details
Microsoft Windows 95 4.00.950B
PcChips BXPro mother board
Intel Celeron 333 Slot 1 with 64k memory
SIS 5513 Dual PCI IDE Controller
NE2000 type PCI network card
Additional ISA parallel port
I have reinstalled windows - same thing happens
I have falshed the BIOS (AMIBIOS) on the Board - no difference
Plan to try W98 next to see if this is a problem
I'm curious that this does not seem to be a common problem posted elsewhere.
HP help desk are shup at the weekend - will try them on Monday. However delighted to hear a WAG or SWAG from anyone who can help.

Am I right to assume that the message pertaining to the master boot record was issued by the on-board virus protection feature? If so, disable it for now. You can re-enable it after your hardware is installed and working properly.

You might play a little with the CMOS settings and cable locations. Try moving the CD to master on IDE1, leaving the Colorado as a slave on IDE1 or make it slave on IDE0 (I have moved a 14gb Colorado through four systems and, contrary to the recommendations, it worked equally well as slave or master. You might want to try it as master on IDE1 with your CD as slave on IDE0 or vice-versa. I don't think it should affect performance much).

Also, make sure the device is set to "auto" detection in the cmos setup and that the system recognizes the unit by name on boot. I guess that's a given, since the Colorado diagnostics didn't report a problem.

Tomorrow is another day and the HP help desk (such as it is) will be up and yakking. Whatever you do, please post back when you find a viable solution. Not meaning to seem cruel; your misery could help another avoid the same problems tomorrow.

Just a WAG.

Thanks for your help - problem now solved.
The problem was indeed a hardware conflict on the board and although I don't understand the cause fully I can work around it.
a) Installed windows 98 - same error
b) made the Colorado IDE0 slave and CD IDE2 Master
On booting in safe mode (only one that works) I noted that the Control Panel/System parameters showed duplicate entries for the tape and CD. Removed these rebooted and it worked.
Al worked well for a few days until I went into the Bios to check things out. Although no changes were made the error returned.
Finally found that there is a conflict with a Quickcam VC on the parallel port. Solution is to uninstall and remove the hardware. On re boot it works and so does the Colorado. Seems to be an unhappy mix when these two devices are present. Beats me whats going on. [sig][/sig]
