Hi, what is the default windows user profile? For instance, after booting up, when at the logon screen, if I choose cancel and save items in the My Documents folder, the true path to this folder is c:\my documents.
But if I logon as another user, the path is c:\windows\profiles\user\my documents. Because when I set up the new users recently, my HUGE "my documents" folder was also copied multiple times for each user. My hard drive is filling up quick and I want to undo what I've done. I've been working for quite a while and now want to copy the user files to the default c:\my documents file. How can I do this? I can copy from user to user but I don't understand where the default is stored.

Make sense???!!!

Thanks for any help.

Cindy

Try saving/copying all the documents from each login into C:\My documents.

Then right click the "My Documents" icon on the desktop, and select properties.

On the target tab, you can set the target path to c:\My Documents.

Do this for each of the logins on that machine, and then you will be able to delete the copies on the other user profiles.

Set up this way, there is only one My documents folder on the machine, and everyone will have access to them all.

Of course, you could leave them all in one of the profile paths and point the other logins to that profile also.

Good luck, and Happy Computing

mjinks61,
You're suggestion is fine if Cindy doesn't think that more people will log on in the future and create new accounts. What's happening is that her My Documents folder is replicating each time a new user signs on. If you change the path and manually copy the files to C:\My Documents for each user, you will solve only part of the problem. The other part is keeping it from happening again.

Cindy,
I need one clarification. What is currently in C:\My Documents? Is that the folder that's extremely large that keeps getting copied multiple times?

I'm guessing so. If you don't want it to get duplicated each time a new user signs on, you'll need to clear out C:\My Documents. First, I suggest creating your own folder to store the documents that need to be shared among all users. Move the contents of C:\My Documents into this new folder. Then, create a shortcut to that folder (call it something like "Shared Docs") and put it under:

C:\Windows\Desktop
-AND-
C:\Windows\Start Menu

Now, every time a "new user" signs on, they will get a copy of the Desktop and Start Menu which contain the shortcut. All default folders like My Docs and Desktop are located directly under C:\Windows. ~cdogg

Great, thanks to you both. I've taken your suggestions and all is well. I appreciate it!
