Take care of the System Partition. Use the three nt boot floppies for installation.(I believe the hdd is empty.)Try to use service pack 4a before going up. Also check the encryption bit i.e. 40 bit or 128 bit and use the corresponding sp. Apart from these, simply follow the instructions which comes up during installation and it won't be much of a problem to you. In case if you face any problem always feel free to ask.

Marc,

You don't need to download service packS because each one has all the cumulative changes of the previous ones. I would highly suggest you download SP6a and stick with it as it has all the fixes that the previous ones didn't especially with the TCP/IP Stack problem. Just load NT Server first and once it is up, run the Service Pack...AND remember to always re-apply (re-run) the Service Pack after hardware installs and most major software installs. One thing you will really want to do too is download IE 4.01 SP2 and load it (it has the desktop update that makes the shell easier to use), then download IE 5.5 and load it (then re-apply SP6a). That way, you have NT Server 4 with SP6a and IE 5.5.

Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. Have fun! B-)

Depending on the server, you may have to press [F6] before the blue setup screen appears, and load the manufacturer's storage drivers.

I saw this a lot with DELL servers, where the SCSI adapter needed DELL's driver at this point, or the installation would fail.

You should be able (again, depending on the hardware) to boot from the CD, rather than use the setup disks.

If you're planning on using Office 2000, don't install IE5.5, because it installs an incorrect VXD. There's a TechNet article on this, if you're interested.

Hope this helps!

CitrixEngineer, do you have the TechNet article number on IE 5.5 installing an incorrect VXD for Office2000?

I have been battling a problem with Outlook 2000 and attachments...they may be related.

Thanx!

MaestroG - certainly do!
(Q279177).

To translate this article, what Microsoft are trying to say is that if you have installed Office 2000, don't install IE5.5 unless you want this error message every now and again.

IE5.5 overwrites a file called VGX.DLL with an incorrect version. You're safe with IE 5.0x, but you don't get some of the newer frills (ie security loopholes plugged - that sort of thing).

Marc, have a look at

...this is a popular board at the moment, and, while probably not the fastest, include on-board SCSI, dual-processor support and is reckoned to be pretty stable.

...here are a couple of boards which would be good for home use - and with overclocking abilities too. The VIA chipset has a reputation for not being quite as stable as the BX chipset, however.

If you're not wanting to go dual at any point, this article will help get you up to speed with what's happening with the Intel 815 chipset boards:

For a server, stable is generally preferred over speed. More memory will give better payback than a faster processor.

I hope this helps - good luck!
