I have Windows XP and have downloaded the latest version of Windows Media Player. I set the speaker volume to maximum, and when I play video clips from email and on Yahoo, I have no problem hearing them. I recently purchased "Dances with Wolves" on DVD, when I play it on my computer, the normal dialog is barely audible, and the quiet dialog is completely inaudible. Is there any way to turn the volume any higher?

I had already done everything else, so in installed the software at the link you gave.

1) It opened a new instance of ie, which crashed on attempted closing and opened a new instance of ie . . . The only way I got out of this loop was to power off.

2) It installed crap all over my desktop and task bar, including pop-up ads which I couldn't close. It took me half an hour to clean up.

I'll forget about the movie

Sorry, but I had no such problem on my machine, otherwise I would not have instructed you to go there...

btw. the link takes you to the FREE-CODECS.COM website (no problems there either), where you can download the AC3Filter...

which is
there choose the most recent version: 1.62b

Well, I found more messes on my computer. The software had even changed my home page, even though I had explicitly told it not to. Some of the programs did not appear on Add/Remove software. One program had its own "Remove" entry, the other I had to delete manually.

The old adage "you get what you pay for" comes to mind, but in this case I got a lot more then I "paid" for.

I will check the APP out...

I installed the KLite Mega Codec Pack, and have never had a problem there... it includes the AC3 Filter Driver, and thus I did not check the file...

but I still apologize, that it caused you trouble, I did not want that...

From my research, and yes I opened up the LINKS in IE, I even installed the latest version of the AC3 filter from the link given...

and...

...

NOTHING at all happened, except what I expected, the filter driver installed and no infections at all...

So I don't know where/how you got infected...

When I rebooted, I had to do a system recovery to get restarted.

When I read the comments at the end of Ben's original link there is no evidence of malware infection, nothing untoward is mentioned, and several people commented that the AC3 filter fix worked.

In your situation it might have been an unfortunate coincident. When surfing, it is advisable to do so as a Limited user, not an Administrative user, this will help protect you from malware infection.

I see lots of recommendations here for programs like -

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

SuperAntispyware

Does that DVD play correctly on other computers, an do other DVD play normally on your machine? Is the DVD a commercially recorded one or a copy of one? Maybe you are a victim of a pirated copy?

I bought the DVD at WalMart. Other DVD's play well, except for one which I suspect is a pirated copy, and it won't play at all. I might ask my son to try the DVD on his computer.
