I had Windows Media Player set as the default for *.wav and *.mid files in IE5.0. Now it is set to QuickTime. How can I change it back?

Open Explorer, find a .wav file, hold down the SHIFT key, right click the .wav, select "Open with", and from the menu, select WMP, making sure to put a mark in the "Always open with..." box.
Do the same with a .mid file. Cheers,
Jim

DarkAngel,

I'd suggest doing it on the formats tab in Media Player options Since these are MIME types, they will be entered correctly.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for responding.

In IE5.0 there is no "Open with" option, so I assumed you might be refering to Windows Explorer. There is an "Open with" option there, and it was already set to Windows Media Player.

The correct WMP icon shows with the *.wav and *.mid files while in Windows Explorer. I went ahead and selected "Choose Program", then selected WMP and checked the "Always open with..." box (just in case something was funny). Still get the same results in IE. It only seems to be a problem with the browser.

Hello reghakr,

I checked out the Formats tab in Media Player. All the file format boxes are checked, but the problem persists.

Thanks,
D.A.

In Media Player it might be worth de-selecting and then re-selecting all and see what happens. :)

Hi paulwood,

I had tried deselecting then reselecting just the options for wave and midi files, and it did not resolve. I didn't think to deselect all of them. I did that and reselected all, but still have the problem in my browser.

:)

If you don't use Quicktime you could uninstall it, or conversely reinstall media player, otherwise I can't think of anything obvious. There's probably a registry tweak or two, but I have no idea what they might be!

paulwood,

Yes, I believe it is "wigging out".

Thanks again,
D.A.

Open Quicktime.
Select Edit, Preferences, Quicktime Preferences.
From the pulldown menu, select Browser Plugin.
Untick ALL 3 options, then click the button, MIME SETTINGS.
UNtick ALL boxes.
NOW WMP should play your stuff. Cheers,
Jim
