Windows Makes Copies of Printer

I have 3 USB printers on my computer. One is an HP2200D which I use as my primary printer. One is a CD/DVD printer which I almost never use any more. The third is a Kodac 5100 AIO, which is the problem. From time-to-time Windows sees this printer as "offline", whatever that means. That makes no sense as the scanner is always available. Anyway, when the printer is "offlline", Windows then suddenly discovers it and loads a second driver for it, which Windows calls "(Copy 1)". The real problem is that Windows then makes this the primary printer, and I sometimes print to it expecting the HP to be the primary printer. Is there anything I can to to stop Windows from doing this?

See if you get any ideas from these?

The default printer in the host computer changes when you logon using Remote Desktop?

how to stop auto-installation of printers?
thread779-1183400

None of these seems to be totally relevant. They do not address the following points:

1) Why does Windows think my printer is "offline"?

2) Why does Windows make a new copy of the driver?

3) Why does Windows change the "primary printer" without my knowledge or permissiion?
