Windows Logs Out after a few minutes (not set up to do that)

I recently installed the Belkin Wireless G USB adapter on my PC running XP. I know that all my settings regarding Power and Standby are all set up exactly the way I want. But for some reason after installing Belkin USB adapter, it logs me out when I'm idle for a few minutes, not 1 hour, like I've specified in my settings.

What could be causing this?

Have you tried calling Belkin Tech Support? I've called them a number of times & have gotten excellent & free support after a minimum wait time. Their no. in USA is 800-223-5546. Hope this helps!

I'm sorry, I'm in Ireland and I don't have a landline available, so a mobile call to the US of A is out of the question. I'm 99% sure I can fix the problem, if I know what it is... what triggers the computer the automatically log out.

I may uninstall the software and see if the problem goes away... but it's really annoying, especially because I proof publications on screen and I'm reading technical written work and the computer logs out.

Would my question be for another forum perhaps?

Belkin has a Tech Support no. for Europe also. It's 00 800 223 55 460. You can also contact Belkin via E-mail for Product Support @

Before uninstalling your adapter card, try disabling Windows firewall to see if that works. If it doesn't, reset your settings for logout to default & use the Radio ON/OFF button to turn the card's transmitter on or off when idle. That might eliminate your frustration until you get a reply from Belkin. Hope this helps!

I've contacted them, they say it will be 72 hours... I will wait but I'm not happy about it :(

Are you really getting logged out, or do you just have to enter you password again at the Welcome Screen? (have a look at the checkbox option in your screensaver properties).

It's to the Welcome Screen, sorry I should have specified. The screensaver options are set to nothing, I don't have a screensaver, so the option is grayed out. The only thing I have set is the Power, turn off monitor after one hour, and that's it. I usually leave the computer running algorithms for long periods of time so I don't want to log out, welcome screen, screen saver or anything else. And I don't or have ever set them up to do so.

Have you tried booting in Safe mode to see if the results are the same, or System Restore? Also, when you boot into Safe Mode, select "Last known good configuration" and see if that helps.

Something weird happened. I had set up a Web Page for my desktop, as I was using it awaiting updates, so it was easier to see it there, without having to open a browser. Turns out it was this that was causing the problem, not the new wireless adapter I had installed.... computers
