I'm running Windows 7 - Windows Live Mail started giving me the message "A problem occurred while trying to open this message." any time I try to open a message (including old ones). I've unistalled all of Windows Live Essentials which includes Windows Live Mail. I also cleared the registry entries for these and then rebooted and reinstalled All of Windows live Essentials. I imported the email I exported before I unistalled Windows Live Email. I get the same message when I try to open any email, old or new.

Are you waiting a minute or 2 before trying to open the message - when Live Mail starts ( especially if you are logged in ) it checks your email and news account (or accounts) and does other tasks and until they are complete that message will pop up when you try to open things .

If you use the menu File/ Work Offline, can you open any downloaded messages?
If you test from Safe Mode with Networking do the messages open?
If so, what about a Clean Boot routine?

Have a look at this utility.
WMUtil
Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (this will run it in a Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, restart it by ticking both boxes, and rerun it to allow it to attempt to fix any found problems.
Have you tested with another Windows user in case your current profile is corrupted?
