We have Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) 3.0 as a stand-alone installation that is using the Windows Internal Database (WID).

The content database (mdf) size is 300 MB and the log database (ldf) size is 757 MB.

Are the SharePoint databases that use WID maintenance free? For example, is there ever a need to shrink the log file? Will WSS manage the databases so that I don't need to be concerned?

I've installed SQL Server Management Studio Express.

I think they are relatively maintenance free. That being said, I recently had a problem with a Sharepoint install such as your setup. Problem was that I ran out of room on my C Drive because the log file just kept growing. I don't know if this normal, but I ended using the SQL Studio Management Express to get into the database and set a Max Size on the Log files. Since then, I haven't had any problems...but the logs do hover at that size....
