Windows Installer problems

I recently installed an upgraded of the Windows Installer - Version 2. However my system was then unable to automatically run msi files when double clicking on them. I manually associated these files with msiexec.exe, but now I always get the message box abount incorrect command line parameters. I tried doing msiexec /unregister and msiexec /regserver but get a windows installer message box stating "Unspecified Error".

Does anyone have any ideas what's going on?
