I work for a large retailer that has multiple XP-based PC's in the admin areas of their stores. They uniformly run XP and Office 2000. On about half the units, when closing Word 2000 or Excel 2000, the following pop-up message sequence comes up.
1) Windows Installer.
Preparing to Install
2) Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Standard
Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Standard.
Gathering required information.....
3) Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Standard
The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.
Insert the 'Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Standard' disk and click OK.
Use source (pull down says "Microsoft Office 2000"
Since nobody has any disks, everyone clicks cancel and it comes up with
4)Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Standard.
Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Standard. The Windows Installer cannot continue.
They click OK and everything runs fine.
This happens on CLOSING, not OPENING, and on about half the PC's in house. Once a PC starts to do it, it will keep doing it. Resetting, etc... makes no difference.
This is far more of a morale issue, than a practical one, so the support folks just tell us to hit Cancel, and ignore it.
Now, years ago, ISTR that there was a fix for this involving a small change to a registry value - but I sure can't find it anymore. I've read most of the FAQ's and other references - are there any old-timers out there? Does anyone remember it?
Thanks!
Rich
