Windows Installer 3.1 and BITS

I have 2 servers, both Windows 2000 server, and when I do an OS update, Windows Update wants to install Windows installer 3.1 and bits. After the DL, if fails to install. Downloaded the files manually, and they installed fine. Went back to Windows update, and all the updates failed to load. So I uninstalled them, now I'm back at square one.

Did copy the log file to my desktop (to large to place here), so if someone could tell me what to look for or how to fix this, that would be great.

I've had this on 2k pro boxes and found that stopping the automatic updated and BITS service and emptying the following directories helped.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network

and sometimes you will find corrupt patches in this folder

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Once this is done restart the serices and try again.

Remember to have a good backup as always, although i've never had any probs.

Thank you for your reply. I'll let you know if it works. Since these are production servers will have to do maint. on the weekends.
