Hi,

I'm coming from a novell environment and I've been told that we need to get an undelete program to bolt onto windows server to get the same salvage feature in an AD environment..

first I would like to ask you if this is true.. I find it hard to believe that microsoft would have left something so simple out of their file server..

Second I'd like to hear what you guys are using for undelete software.. pros cons.. whatnot

-----
for those who do not know.. salvage is a "recycle bin" for the network. you can quickly bring back files that have been recently deleted instead of pulling everything off of the backup tapes...

thanks for all your help...

I have no help for you, but it's nice to know someone has this feature available. I could never figure out why it wasn't part of MS Server systems.

Executive software's "Undelete" is fantastic, a supplement to shadow copy. For me, an absolute must have, unless your users enjoy losing revisions, and all the work between shadow copies, which are too resource intensive to run every 5 minutes. Also if you like going to the tapes for revisions I would definitely leave this software alone.

Undelte only deals with files, mimics salvage. Shadow copy is OK but will not keep up to second revisions.

If you think the lack of Salvage is bad is a joke, MS lacks "Delete Inhibit", the is a cardinal sin. Image a disgruntled employee with modify rights, trashing your server in seconds.

Imagine a well used directory, deleted by a user by accident, containing 1000 files, 100 modified after the last shadow copy.. this is where Undelete really pays.

If you do go for it, make sure folders which build up tmp files are excluded from the "recovery" bin such as Symantec CE temporary files, cookies, c:\windows\temp, and the \local\temp folders under the user profiles.

This is advice from an MCNE, who rarely sees a Novel server anymore... due to Novell's self inflicted loss of the market share, as the CEOs were too busy playing golf, a few years back (I note some bitterness within ).

Microsoft's excuse is that they have a "rich group of third party developers who provide a mature cross section of products and they don't want to p!ss them off").

The last bit was mine :)

yeah... we were directed from one of our other sites to look into Executive software's "undelete"..

I just wanted to get feedback and see what other programs people are using...

I do appreciate your feedback!

and since WHEN exactly have MS cared about not stepping on other software company's shoes and taking market share....?

True.. if I was dependent upon third party developers to write my utility modules, I would be scared to piss them off. On the plus side for Microsoft, at least the Os has most of needed modules to run the OS; years ago with Novell, you had to pay big bucks to get Novell to talk to other systems, seemed everything was a costly add-on.

Part of my reason for jumping ship.. The dead silence on the other end of a tech call, when I asked about a driver or software module for Novell. After 3 such calls in row to different vendors, the writing was on the wall.

That was back in the day when Novell controlled the market and could get away with charging big bucks for that, I remember some of those quotes and they often left a you with a burning itching sensation in your pocket.
