I've had my browser hijacked to about:blank which has happend before and I have always managed to remove it.

This time I can't and it has also disabled my access to Windows explorer - My computer icon has disappeared, Windows exporer short cut has disappeared, pressing Windows-key+E make the desktop reload and typing explorer into the Run command does the same. I can get into Windows explorer in safe mode but that is the only way.

Also the system restore point program has been deleted from the system so this is a fairly comprehensive trojan (I presume)

None of the usual spyware programs, Adaware, Spybot or my Trend antivirus find anything.

Anybody seen anything like this before?

Try running sfc /scannow from the command prompt if possible to see if any system files may have been modified. Ensure you have the Windows CD if you're not running any service packs.
