I think I accidentaly deleted a file in netscape or internet explorer because now I sometime get a Windows 98 error message whne I click on a link saying that Program.exe ( I think it also said Netscape.exe at one time ) is missing and that this program is necessary to open files of type "URL hypertext transfer protocol"

I have a compaq 5050 computer and use windows 98. I tried downloading the previous versions of internet explorer and netscape but that didnt solve the problem. I think the missing program is associated with netscape.

I also tried doing a quick Windows restore using the Compaq CD but the restore said I was missing the program also so I cant do a quick restore.

Anyone have any ideas?

place the Solaris 8 CD-Rom in the drive and boot to it ...

when it asks you if you really want to remove other formatting on the drive, say yes ...

when the installation has completed you will no longer have any trouble ith your 'Start Menu' bar or a program.exe file that fails to load ...

Netscape (if you do a full install) will work just as well, and in fact will store your user profiles sensibly as an individual user.

The great advantage of this system is that as long as you don't log in as root, you won't be able to accidentally delete system files.

DOH! lol Jon :)

tomdxx - Two things might work to fix the problem. Download and re-install Netscape Communicator on top of your current installation of Netscape. This should fix the file association problems as long as you tell Netscape to be your default browser (I think this prompt comes up when you first launch Netscape after a new install).

IF that does not fix the problem then the missing program may actually have come from the Windows 98 installation. In this case try doing a refresh installation of Windows. Simply re-install Windows98 on top of your current installation.

Note: BACKUP your important data files (things you created) before things get worse.

My personal rule of thumb with Win98 is:

"FDISK and reformat the drive and re-install Windows from scratch once every 6 months to improve performance and stability".

This does wonders for my home system. And, the best part is that it makes me perform regular backups of my important data which is essential when dealing with MS-Windows.

umm ... with win2000 it gets harder ... (btw don't change your hardware under 2000 too often, you'll need a nice new shiney code from Microsoft to install it, and there are a limited number of times you can change it :)

PS. if you install Staroffice you'll also end up 1 more stage away from any Microsoft products :)
