I have a machine running AMD K6-2/400 win98, 64mb RAM, and recently it has started to have trouble loading files to start windows, and has been getting blue screens of death. Just now, when I tried to start it up, it wouldn't go, couldn't find win.com. I checked the hd, and most of the files seem ok, except for the Windows directory. It has four files. The first three are made of symbols and zero-length, but the fourth one is titled x and apparently is somewhere near 2gb or so. Is this a virus? Bad HD? Windows incompatibility? I'd never heard of this happening before besides one time I messed up with fdisk, but fdisk was not involved in this catastrophe. I have no idea what to do with this one...

sounds like a boot sector virus, i would run fdisk and remove all partitions and start from scratch [sig][/sig]

I definately sounds like a virus messing with your files. [sig]

English is too hard to learn, the vowles change too much like come/home, comb/tomb, book/school, high/bye/sty, etc., etc. So should I say Geez or Sheez or Cheeze? hehe.[/sig]

Yes is either virus or faulty HDD. If FAT tables corrupt could cause similar results. [sig][/sig]

Ok, well, I put the HD in another computer and scanned it with Norton Antivirus 2k, and it found no viruses, so I guess that's not the problem, or the virus did its work and evaporated.

I installed Win Me 11 days ago (upgrade from Win98 SE) and now my system will not boot up past hardware recognition screen. Ran scandisk, defrag and chkdsk from DOS. Tried scandisk and defrag from Safe Mode in Windows. Norton Anti-virus 2001 detected no virus in FAT, or any Windows Registry or System files. No new software installation after Win Me. I did come across ASPI2DOS installation failure though. I am going back to Win98 SE now. Hope you solved your problems with Win Me. Win Me is nothing great, but new OS is always a fun challenge, especially from the big "M".
