Windows Desktop failure

We have a suit of 85 machies running Windows 2000 on a Novell Network. Today the machines suddenly stopped pulling the desktop through. The desktops are being managed by Zenworks 2, the symptoms are as follows:

Icons appear on the desktop as unrecognized file types.
The start menu does not display any options, if it does the menu will appear with 2 out of 5 options and the rest of the box is just blank and the machine freezes. Has anybody had or seen anything like this before.
