I am trying to deploy Windows XP over a PXE boot using Windows Deployment Servicse and Deployment Toolkit 2008. WDS and Deployment toolkit are both installed.

I then created the following in Deployment toolkit: (using a Microsoft Guide)
Created the Distribution Share
Created the Tasks Sequence
Created the Deployment point

Now when I hit F12 and attempt a PXE boot the following apears:

PXE-T01: File not found
PXE-E3B: TFTP Error - File not found

Can anyone help me on this please
Thanks!

You think I did not try Google first?

I do not have the following files/folder because that is only there if you have previously installed RIS. I do not have RIS as I will not need it because I wont be using any legacy images.

\OSChooser\I386 folder:
• NTLDR
• Startrom.com
• Startrom.n12

And when you followed the resolution in the KB what happened exactly?

There are no more PDC's! There are DC's with FSMO roles!

I did not follow the resolution in the KB because it did not apply to me. I would only need to follow that if I have been using RIS (remote installation services) before WDS was available.

Yet your error is exactly as detailed in that KB. Funny...I'd try the resolution there to see if it worked...but that's me.

Good luck.

Funniest. Thing. Ever.

Its ok I have worked it out now (by my self thanks!)

For the reference of others who have the same problem as me. You need to obtain the boot.wim file (from a Server 2008 or Vista disk) paste it into C:\RemoteInstall\Boot\x86. Now create a boot image in Windows Deployment Services using the boot.wim file.

Now I can create my custom images for XP/Vista and Windows Server 2003/2008 and install them by doing a network boot!
