Can you run windows defrag on a volume that houses a SQL DB? Do you have to shut down SQL services first before defragging if it is possible?

Thanks.

If it is possible you should shut down the instance.

I have had pretty good luck with the latest versions of DisKeeper. You are able to customize the jobs on many levels in order to aleviate any performance issues on the DB while it is active.

Thanks

A properly setup disk drive for a SQL Database shouldn't have any fragmentation on it. After you defrag the drive you'll want to remove what ever files are causing the fragmentation on the disk.

mrdenny,

that is true. but the person who built this server built one raid 5 volume. so the DB does not exist on its on partition.
