The servers in across our companies are predominately Windows 2000/2003. I would like to put a Linux server in, to get a taste for it in the workplace. As I am fairly new to linux I will be installing a workstation to dabble on, as a learning process.

The company Fileserver seems like it would be a viable option, mainly because it can quickly be restored onto a windows server should I (when I) accidentally destroy it.

Could anyone recommend a good Distro for basic server use (where an inexperienced person is involved)? Also, while I am losely aware of and have used SAMBA briefly, is there anything else to consider when placing a Linux server on a mainly AD network?

Thank you kindly in advance for any advice you may be able to offer.

Samba's the tool you'll want...

Distribution preference/recommendation threads have been done to death here, check the FAQ and other threads...

They're all basically the same guts, you just need to figure out much GUI and what methods of package management/updates you desire. Commercial versus vounteer support is typically another major consideration.

Any distro will do the job. COncerning samba, probably a easy way to start is to installl webmin onto your linux distro and configure your shares / users / windoz domains etc.. using webmin.

I usually do not recommend webmin as it f..ks up config files but it does a pretty good job with samba.

Thank you kindly for the replies. I shall have a read through the FAQs and give webmin a shot.
