I have a laptop hard drive with win 98se (fat32) that i was given for a older lap top i have. Problem i have is, when windows opens it only opens to the center of the screen. The program runs ok all else seems fine apart from not being able to veiw a full screen. My tech knowledge is not up their with the best so help is needed. I have tried changing the settings in Display but to no avail. I have tried the hard drive in two laptops with the same result. I looked into bios but could not find anything there to change. Do i buy a tiny laptop ? or put the drive on ebay. Hoping some one can help. Cheers Nugget.

Does the BIOS have a screen 'stretch' option - you probably need that on.

Most likely the wrong drivers are being used. Go to control panel - system properties - display adapters and right click all adapters shown and select remove. Don't allow auto reboot but restart manually later.

With any luck the correct video drivers should install on re-boot, but you may need a 98se CDROM to hand. Or you may end up with a default VGA display 640 x 480 and can proceed from there.

I agree with stduc its most likely a driver issue. Since you mention this came from another laptop, then it has drivers for that one installed for all the hardware. Booting to it from the different laptop, will cause problems like the one you describe. Which is why Windows (any version of Windows) should never be transfered like that between computers. Win98 may be good enough to allow you to boot. But Windows 2000, or XP will just not boot, or require reactivation of the OS.

To fix the problem, you'll probably need to find a correct driver for the video card on the current laptop.

I'd go to the manufacturer's website, and download it from there.

Also make sure Win98 isn't booting into Safe Mode which can also cause behavior like the one you describe.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

If you can find a set of drivers for the laptop and SE you would best be served by getting into the registry and deleting the HKLM ENUM key and letting the laptop reload all the correct drivers.

That key being deleted will force a reload of everything relating to hardware.
