Hello everyone, I have a quick question. I have six printers setup at the office. This week I configured all printers with an IP address (we are eliminating our Novell server which we are currently using for our print server, so I am making all printers TCP/IP). I am having no problems with my Win 2000 and Win NT machines connecting to the printer via TCP/IP printer port. But, on my Windows 98 machines, I do not have the option of adding an LPR port. I checked with HP on this and they are somewhat helpful, but I am wondering if there is a fix for this, maybe a download from Microsoft, or if I need to use a third-party solution. Thank you very much.

Hi. I managed a Novell network with a variety of printers before disability retirement. If memory serves, for LPR.... I had to re-install each printer as a network printer as part of the process, and some of the printers needed the install disk. The Tektronix Color laser printer, Lexmark and IBM network printers, HP, etc. were all installed this way, at the office. My home network is disasembled and packed for moving or I could give you a step-by-step after a quick review. (my memory doesn't serve THAT well <G>)

Windoz 95 had LPR, Win98 doesn't?

Good luck.

You have to use third party solution for Win9x.
If your printers are HP, you can download Hp JetAdmin. Hp removed links to it from their website, but you can still get it from their ftp site. Install just the printing part if you do not want discovery service running on the background. It works pretty good - we use it in the office.
Here are links to win9x and win3.x versions:

ftp.hp.com/pub/networking/software/hawks/hpja95en.exe
ftp.hp.com/pub/networking/software/hawks/hpja3xen.exe

Good luck.

I am just backing up BOKA on this one. Windows 98 by default does not support Networked Printers without third party software. The Network them when installing printers under Win98 is for printers that have been HSARED by another user. Once they are shared then you can use that shared printer under Win98. But to print ot a specific IP printer you need software. James Collins
