hi,

my pc specs :
pentium III 500Mhz
512Mb Ram
windows 98se

my pc has an atx power supply and motherboard, and usually when you click "shut down" windows shuts down and the pc turns the power off.

this morning, i installed an ati all in wonder radeon video card in it. since then, when i click "shut down" windows closes itself and eventually displays "it's now safe to turn off your computer" on the screen and i have to manually pull the plug to turn it off.

Why would installing a video card cause the pc to not power off?

how can i fix it so that it doen not show that message ?

any help would be appreciated.

C'mon Fred, check out the FAQ section:

hi carr, i tried this but it still noes not work.

maybe you misunderstood, but windows is shutting down. what my issue is that after shutting down the OS, the power does not turn itself off as it should when using an "atx" power supply as opposed to an older "at" type.

what i'm getting is the message you would associate with an older "at" system that says "it's safe to turn off your computer"

i want to get rid of that message and get the pc back to self powering off mode.

is my problem any clearer now?

You bet...sorry for the misread. It appears you need to enable Advanced Power Management in your BIOS.

ok here's the update...

APM was already enabled in the bios

BUT,

in the device manager, under systems devices, there was a yellow exclamation mark next to the "Advanced Power Management support" device.
so i removed that device, re-booted and it re-installed itself and now everything is back to normal!

thanks carrr for the pointer in the right direction !
