to upgrade it to windows xp (...) i want to reformat the hard drive"
you want to upgrade to xp or you want to install a fresh xp?

boot from the xp disk, during the process of installing you can partition and format the hdd,
or do you mean the keyboard is not responsive then?

What i would like to do is wipe out windows 98 se. and start over with windows xp the problem is this my keyboard is not responsive at all not even in windows 98 se i dont have no cd for windows 98 se so it can find the driver to install the keyboard. Ive tried just puttin in the xp cd and downloadin it at the begining but without the keyboard not being recognize i cant put in the keycode for the new windows xp. All im trying to do is wipe windows 98 se off the computer and replace it with windows xp due to my internet from my cable company who dont acknowledge windows 98 se anymore cause its out of date. I want to remove windows 98 se and put in windows xp but my keyboard doesnt function without a windows 98 se cd to find drivers so that it can recognize that i have a keyboard, I cant access the internet on that tower because windows 98 se is out of date.

it is a brand new keyboard it is a usb keyboard when i plug it in it goes through the data about found new hardware on your computer then it says to put in the disk windows 98 se to install the drivers i dont have the disk labeled windows 98 se i have a windows xp disk so beings i cant upload the drivers for the keyboard i cant install windows xp

That is the issue with USB keyboards. They have to have drivers to work.

98 was designed with BIOS locatable keyboards as part of the hardware.

You need a PS/2 or AT keyboard, depending on which connector you have.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

For your keyboard, you can use a USB to PS/2 converter if you have any laying around - doesn't matter what color is on it, as long as it goes USB to PS/2 you should be fine.
