I have just wiped out an old desktop that was ate up with viruses, I am reinstalling Windows 98 Second Edition, I put a product key in but I am not sure if it was the right one. It went through with the rest of setup until it started to install drivers and some .dll files. Do you think if I had the wrong product key that would cause a problem or is it the disk itself? It keeps telling me to put the Windows 98 Second Edition disk in but it is in the drive already. I am still in the learning process of this and it has been a while since I have worked on Windows 98. Thanks in advance for any help.

If it got past the next screen after you entered the key code it was accepted.

It is asking for the CD because it wants some drivers. It may be that it has the pointers wrong, you may be able to browse to the proper place. It is also possible that you have a drive that needs drivers to work.

Best soulution if you have room is to put the install stuff on the hard drive and install from there.

Once it takes the key, and moves on, it means the key was good. It if had been a bad key it would have told you immediately after putting it in.

In addittion to edfair's points, it could be the disc is dirty or the drive lens is dirty, and it can't read the disc properly.
