When my computer is booting, an entry appears on the screen with words to the effect
that windows may need the file hpsjvxd.vxd to run properly. If you have deleted the program
that uses this file, the delete the entry in the system.ini file or in the registry. Then "press
any key to continue."

It is annoying to have to wait for win98 to boot halfway before the message comes that requires
a key press before win98 will continue to load. A key press does continue
the booting process and as far as I know, the computer runs without any
problem.

I have found no direct entry of the file hpsjvxd.vxd and I don't know of any program that calls for
it, so I don't know how to stop the system from alerting me that the file isn't there.

I would appreciate any advise on ways to overcome this problem short of formatting my hard
drive.

Do you have a Hewlett Packard printer? Try reinstalling the printer drivers and see what happens.
There are more drastic solutions... fortunately, reformating your hard drive or even manually editing the registry are probably not among them.

hi maybe you have to look in the system.ini after the file and delete it there.
otherwise search for the filename in the registry

greetings Raymond

hpsjvxd -- HP ScanJet maybe???? I'm not positive, but maybe it could also be for a scanner/multi-function device.

If you have a Scan Jet (or any other scanner) try reinstalling the software.

Otherwise, I agree with Raym0nd with system.ini and the registry -- but would also check any of the other ini files just to make sure (config.sys, autoexec.bat, win.ini) not likely they are in there, more than likely its in the registry (also check the startup folder in the start menu). Might also check the Run/RunOnce/RunServices keys under HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion to see if there is any software trying to start but needing that file to continue to run.

As always, make sure you export the registry to a file before making ANY changes to it.

Hope this helps,
Paul

By reinstalling all the drivers I have for HP equipment: LaserJet III,
DeskJet 550C, and ScanJet IIcx, the problem went away. However, using
the Find Utility in Win98, there wasn't any file named hpsjvxd.vxd in the
system. That was the problem, the file wasn't there. Or what the real
problem was is that whatever software program that was calling for it
(hpsjvxd.vxd), wasn't known to me and I didn't know of anyway to determine
what the name of that program was, so I couldn't delete the program. Since
the problem went away, I haven't tried to find out any more on the subject.
I very much appreciated the responses I received and of course, they were
helpful since they solved the my problem.
