Hi everyone!

Can anyone tell me how I can set up a password in the dialogue box "Welcome to Windows" after booting up my PC?
At the moment, I just click on Escape or Enter and it goes through automatically.
Can this be done for my standalone PC or is it only available for networks?

Thanks.

Daniel.

It can be used for either a stand alone PC, or for a networked one.
Go to Control Panel/Passwords, and click 'Change Passwords'.

However, others can still gain access to your system by simply closing the PW prompt at startup.

A better way to make your system secure is to set up a system PW in CMOS setup.
But make sure to write it down, and do not lose it.

In short:
Windows 95 passwords can ALWAYS be bypassed with Esc.

A little trick you can try is to add your password protected screensaver to the startup list.
As soon as Win95 loads the desktop (with or without Esc), the screensaver kicks in, with a password!

Win9x/ME is not secure by any means....I already thought of a way around Marcs41 suggestion - but it may work for you anyway nonetheless.
The BIOS password is as 'good as it gets' for 9x - there are system policies that can be employed and also worked around, and it's complicated.....so

btw - why do you have the "Welcome to Windows" screen displaying at boot up anyway?

I know there is a way around the screensaver trick too, but the average user does not.
Of course, a BIOS password is always working, and for every OS.

yes - i wasn't putting down the suggestion Marcs41 - i's all dependent on how far one needs to secure the box. And BIOS passwords can be gotten around as well (as you know) - all that's needed is physical access. [surprise]
