I've got an old DELL Win 98 laptop (first edition). During installation of the PCMCIA card, it prompted for the Windows 98 installation disk.

We had the original disk. Nevermind, files were not found. The installation was a complete flop.

We had to skip through without finding the files and I'm back to the old problem of: "How do I remove knowledge of the halfway-installed device" so I can retry the installation again.

I need to know how to fix this. Is it as simple as deleting the device from SYSTEM, DEVICE MANAGER?

You do not specify the linksys PCMCIA adapter you want to install, but if you read the specifications it is for Win98SE or above.

Upgrade your Windows version. In the process your Device table will be cleaned.

It might be possible if you have internet access to use Windows Update to upgrade your Winsock and other services, including critical VXD files, that are not on your original Win98 distribution CD. I just do not know. But trying to use a wireless adapter under Win95, or Win98 original seems to me a hopeless quest.
