when trying to boot my machine, i nearly always get the "blue screen", windows 98 begins to run and then the stupid thing reboots again, this happens about three times in a row, after that it starts to work ok!

before you start suggesting stuff, i cannot and will not format my drive and start from scratch, i've got too much stuff in there!

nice one people!

If you have so much stuff that is valuable, is it being backed up? If not then you are on a narrow tight rope with no net to catch you.

Besides, with windows sometimes the easyist solution is a reinstall. But I don't think that is necessary in this case. Have you updated windows with the latest patches.

Do you have a large number of icons beside the clock, ie programs running in memory? If you do then you may want to disable all the ones that are not being used. To do this goto the start menu/run and type "msconfig" without the quotes. A window will pop, goto the tab marked startup. In there start unchecking boxes that you are pretty sure that you don't need (Note: by unchecking the boxes you are simply not allowing the programs to start, you are not deleting them. If you recheck a box then that program will start the next time you reboot.)

BTW, what kind of hardware are you running?

Good luck....

Troy Williams B.Eng.
fenris@hotmail.com

thanks fenris, will try that later tonight.

what hardware?
are we talking processor, ram, disk space?

if so p3 600, 64 meg sdram (don't know what speed) and 10 gig hdd.

Check your memory and cooler fan. If you are using P3 processor definitely check if your system is adequately
cool inside.
