Windows 98 display settings

What would cause the display settings of windows 98 not to apply after making the selcetion to apply settings? I would select true colors and after applying settings..it defaults back to 16 colors. Any assistance would be grateful...

This could be down to the driver that you have installed for your graphics card. Get an upgraded version from the internet. Are you sure that your graphics card is OK.
What Monitor driver do you have installed?
If it is set to default try using the plug & play monitor driver.
