In windows '98 dial up networking connects to the internet automatically as soon as the computer loads windows. I have checked the startup which is empty and it still does it. I have looked at the internet options and the dial up networking settings but couldnt see anything wrong.

Can someone please help.

Many thanks

You have a program that needs internet attention at startup.

It can be AIM and a trojan.

I'm not sure if win98 has the command msconfig, if it does run it and check what starts at the begining.

There are many options to start a program except adding it to the startup group.

You could try to remove and reinstall the dialer. When you reinstall it, don't do it from Make New Connection in DialUp Networking.
Click Start -> Run, then type inetwiz. You get a better verion of the internet connection wizard.

Check if there is a folder on the Windows directory named 'DIALERS' or 'DIALER' and kill all programs in it including the directory.

If there are more than 1 programs you can try eliminating 1 at a time and rebooting to see wich one has caused you the problem (Store them in the recycle bin or in another directory to make sure you don't loose them)

This directory usually contains programs downloaded from internet sites that automatically connect you to a remote server so you can access its contents (Don't take this wrong but try in the future to stay away from bad sites because thats the most common method they provide access to members).
