Hi all,

I have a problem with Windows 98. It crashes after the computer is started. The error message is that it can't load system configuration. After pressing any key, the computer turns automatically off. If I turn it on again, I can choose to operate the system in safe mode. The fact that I run it in command prompt mode and answer all the questions with "no" doesn't change anything.

Thanks for any hint,

If you can get to the Desktop in Safe Mode go into the Device Manager (right click My Computer then take properties).

Click the pluses next to each item in the list and delete them (all the video cards, mice, sound cards, keyboards, USB etc). Some item you will not be able to delete plus you don't need to delete the System items.

Reboot and hopefully (cross your fingers) the PC will plug and pray and come up ok. New Zealand, a great place to visit.

I am inclined to think this may be a registry error. Boot to DOS then type scanreg /restore and hit enter. This will give you the option of restoring the registry to one of several earlier states. Pick a date prior to the problem starting and try that. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.
