I have an old gateway computer (P3 450Mhz, 384Megs Ram, 13 gig HD) that I am trying to install windows 98 on. I have the windows 98 cd it came with and I repartitioned the HD and reformated it. I then try to install windows and the computer keeps crashing during the installation saying that it cannot copy certain files. Then when I try to boot off the HD it says that there are a bunch of VXD files missing. does anyone know why I can't install windows 98? I talked to gateway and they said the CD is bad (6 yrs old) ???? HELP...thanks

You might try to copy the win98 folder to the hard drive and then install the OS from that folder. If it will not copy the folder to the hard drive because of bad spots on the disk you will get read error.
If you look at the read side of the disk and it shows signs of a milky color, excessive scratches, or missing spots of foil then I would say it is bad.
