Windows 98 and Geforce 2 MX400 memory error

Gateway 500MHZ, sound, modem, 96mb ram, had a voodoo card in it, installed a geforce 2 mx400 card, 64mb. First I had a windows protection error, then I had it crash when loading. I uninstalled the sound card cause it uses 2 IRQ's, I took IRQ7 away from the printer because they have a USBprinter and that didn't do anything, other than let me load Windows. Still showing 16 colors and has the right adapter showing but can't change any settings.

I'm about to do some registry hacking. Nothing new, just thought someone might be able to tell me what's going on. I'll take out any instance of voodoo and geforce I can find and start over again with the install. I have updated the MX400 drivers to 2004 ones instead of 2003, and updated Direct X because they hadn't put anything new on since they got the computer.

I appreciate any help anyone can give me here in a little bit I have to go back to see it again.

Thanks,

Lori

Start in Safe mode, uninstall all video card software from 'Add/Remove Programs', remove all video cards from Device Manager, restart, let Windows recognize the new video card, and reinstall its drivers.

Also, make sure the video card is fully inserted.

I did actually uninstall all cards, all instances everywhere and went back to the standard VGA. No dice.

After seeing your last reply, I wonder if it would have worked if I had reseated it, cause I was getting a memory error even with the Standard VGA in device manager. It was either that or it could have been the DDR memory on the video card playing havoc with the Gateway.

I am going to try and find a 64mb video card with SDRAM on it instead of DDR for this machine, although I ran an ATI card with DDR on an AMD 850mhz system.

Thanks,

Lori

Does the video card show any problems in Device Manager?

Yes, even with the standard VGA setting I had device manager exclamation point, which blew me away. Code 12 I believe, using memory it shouldn't have been using. I don't remember the hex numbers verbatim, but I know it was using more than the usual A000-?, B000-? or C000-?, it was also using E000 and F000.

I checked out the memory in Device Manager too and there were a ton of alias lines, which I have never seen before on any machine. It wasn't using an IRQ although 7, 10 and 11 could have been shared and weren't.

Thanks,

Lori

Uncheck the box for 'Use automatic settings' under 'Resources' for the video card in Device Manager, and select a different 'Basic Configuration'.

If that does not work or there is only one available basic config. for the video card, then highlight each 'Memory Range' item, click 'Change Setting', and select a different memory range.

If that does not work or you are not allowed to change the memory ranges, and the video card is PCI, then install it in a different slot.

If that does not work or if the card is AGP, then go into BIOS, and make sure that 'Yes' is selected for 'PNP O/S Installed'.

If changing it to 'Yes' does not work or 'Yes is already selected, then reinstall the old video card.
If it works, then the new card may be incompatible with the MB. It happens.
You may have to install a different card to replace the Voodoo.

If the old video card has the same problem as the new one, then see if restoring the Registry works.

Thanks, I tried all of the above and none of it worked, except for putting the old video card back in the AGP slot, which Windows 98 picked up and installed drivers for immediately.

I am going to try another 64mb video card later. The card was supposed to be backward compatible to 1X, 2X AGP so the only thing I can think of is the DDR memory on the card made it go nuts. You're right there are just times the MB is freaky.

Thanks for all your help.

"Windows 98 picked up and installed drivers for immediately."

Did you have to use the CD to have Win 98 re-install the old card? If not, you didn't un-install all the drivers. Do as ski says, except you have to un-install the drivers in SAFE MODE/device manager.
